I'm Free by Bellotti Alessandro

The New Year not only brings a fresh start, but a whole new year of accomplishing our goals and ticking the items off of our resolutions list. For some of us that means kicking a nasty habit or two. While we have the best intentions, trying to keep these resolutions can be difficult. As such, one of the habits that a few of co-workers are trying to kick is smoking. I'm Free is a native application that allows you to track your progress as you try to quit smoking. You can earn badges/achievements, track total days and money saved, and share your statistics on social networks. This Built for BlackBerry application is easy to use and offers a convenient and straightforward way to motivate you. On sale, for a limited time for $0.99, it is compatible with BlackBerry 10.

Ultimate Robot Fighting by Reliance Games

Fans of robot fighting will be sure to get a kick out of this game. The goal is to build your roster of larger than life robots, upgrade them, and then have them battle various opponents in the arena. The controls are rather easy, for example in one match you can tap three times for a light attack and then swipe for a heavy attack, and yes I admit the combat style is simple. However, what this does have is great animations and visuals, plays well, and is a free app, though there are in-app purchases. The application is available to download from the Amazon Appstore.

Wish Pix by Beekoi

In the past, we have seen applications that allow you to place text on your images to create a personalized effect. However, this one is unique and makes inserting text easier. This application takes stock images, sorted in different categories such as anniversary cakes, birthday cakes, and wishes, and allows you to modify the images stored by inserting your text. For instance, if we load a birthday cake image, you could modify the text on the cake with the names of your choosing and then save or share to the person. Quite a novel idea if I must say and all of the images are of high quality. Wish Pix is free to download for all BlackBerry 10 handsets.

Get hours of arcade fun with Ice Cubes for BlackBerry 10

$

With the freezing temperatures hitting the Northeast, nothing like playing an arcade game to keeps you on your toes and distracted from the weather. Ice Cubes is the latest game to hit the store by Marco Gallo, who previously kept us glued to our devices with Nostalgia. This time, he has taken his coding talents and created a simple, yet quite addicting, stacking game to occupy us during these long, cold days and nights. Marco's games are always enjoyable and this one is no exception.

When I say the object of the game involves stacking that is the gist entirely. Your goal is to stack the penguins on the tiny iceberg as high as you can. When you reach a particular score, new animals are unlocked to stack, but getting there is the difficult part. You may also earn new characters by liking their Facebook page or rating the game. Not only does it take skill but a good eye as well to be able to stack these pieces on such a small platform as high as you can.

There are different methods to achieve this and it all depends on what works best for you. You could stack them on top of one another in a tower but then the weight might have it come crashing down. There is also what I do which is try to place two cubes on the platform side by side and then stack up from there either straight up or in a pyramid style. Whichever method gets you the highest points is key. In case you were wondering how to play, the answer is quite simple. All you have to do, is tap the screen to drop or stack the cube.

Features

  • Stack to the top challenge, or endless play!
  • Show off your skills to your Facebook Friends!
  • Simply tap the screen, couldn't be easier to play!
  • Smooth effects, Shiny high quality graphics!
  • Addictive gameplay!

No matter what age you are, this is sure to be a cute and entertaining game to play. I must stress again the importance of keeping your eye on the board as sometimes pieces bounce or sway depending on how they are stacked. Right now my high score is 15. Think you can beat that? Let us know in the comments!

Ice Cubes is $1.99 for all BlackBerry 10 devices including those running OS 10.3.1!

Clear Wall by Ghuyfel

While OS 10.3/10.3.1 gives us a screen devoid of icons, this application accomplishes the same concept and goes one step further and lets you set GIF files as wallpapers. It accomplishes this by recreating your desktop within the application. By doing so, you can set your own wallpaper for the main screen as well as the background for the shortcuts that are set when activated. You are giving certain shortcuts in the application including a browser (which you can set the homepage to a site of your choosing), compose email, calendar, and your social networks among others. There is also a built-in weather widget that you can access by swiping down from the middle of the screen. You can download this app for free, and it supports all BlackBerry 10 devices.

Swear By Weather by Francois Lalumiere

For those of you who enjoy a bit of obscenity with their weather forecast, this application is available to download. The purpose of the application is to present users with the current weather conditions along with a few swear words in the process. It is meant to deliver the information in a basic and funny way. If you are easily offended then this application is not meant for you. The developer clearly states in the forums that his application is a continuation of another similar item as the code was open source. As such, you can download it for free for all BlackBerry 10 devices.

Baamboo Player Trial by Luke Soft

As someone who listens to music constantly, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try this player. This full-featured player displays the lyrics while player a song, allows you to browse music by genre, folder, album, and artist, create playlists, add or remove songs, sort your library by various categories, and offers shortcuts for keyboard devices. The application is available in a three-day trial for legacy devices and BlackBerry 10 devices. There is also a premium version for $1.99 available for most BBOS devices as well as the ability to install skins for the player. I do recommend trying to the free trial first as there was an issue on Passport devices for only certain OS versions.

File System by CellNinja

CellNinja is at it again this time with a helpful utility application for anyone who wants to browse files on their system, but not just any files. This native file system navigator gives users the ability to browse their system file folders, thereby granting access to hidden files and folders not available using File Manager. There are several reasons listed as to why a person would need to access those files. For instance, if you want to check the condition of a phone bought secondhand, troubleshoot hardware issues by looking at their state in the file system, obtain a list of applications running in the background, or even because of curiosity. However, the application does not have the ability to modify/create a file so as to prevent issues. File System is $0.99 for BlackBerry 10.

Balance Blox by EntwicklerX

Going through the Amazon Appstore, I discovered an interesting game. The purpose is to drop blocks on the balance. This in turn affects the balance according to the distance from the bottom triangle. By matching three blocks of the same color either vertically or horizontally will clear them from the playing field. The game is over when the balance touches the ground. There are also special blocks available to help you play the game including column and row cleaners. In this game you control where the box falls and where to add a new one. This game involves a lot of concentration and patience and is $1.23 to purchase from the store.

Autodesk Pixlr - photo editor by Autodesk Inc.

Shutterbugs can never be without an editing tool, at least from my experience. Autodesk offers an easy to use photo editing and even allows users to enter Instagram challenges. This application comes with a variety of effects, filters, and overlays to apply to images taken by your camera or in your media library. It also lets you crop, rotate, and adjust your photos to create your own collages. For instance, you could enhance the color of your images, remove red-eye, and even fix blemishes. There is a full array of tools to ensure you edit your photos like a pro. The interface is pretty sweet as well and has a certain flow to it when browsing or selecting filters. Certain effects are already stored while others require downloading to function (there is no charge from what I have seen). You can download it from the Amazon Appstore.

SoundScape by ReFocus Technologies

If there is something we could all use from time to time, it's a little bit of focus. I'm guilty of it; I spend all day behind a desk at work and then all night blogging about BlackBerry. In terms of writing, I usually keep the radio (yes I'm old fashioned) playing in the background or one of my playlists. Being able to boost my productivity is often a given and listening often helps with this. This week saw the release of ReFocus' latest application, entitled SoundScape. Dubbed as a background noise generator it aims to create a relaxing and calming environment with which to work by playing a collection of soothing sounds. There are over 18 sounds to play and mix, the option to mute, and, as always, a design and interface that is both beautiful and gives a dreamlike experience. My favorite happens to be the piano, let us know your favorite in the comments.

First, and most important, is that Verizon Wireless began their online sales of the BlackBerry Classic, though retails stores won't be carrying it until March 5th. From what I see on their website it is available in two variants: one with a camera and one without. Next we saw a new version of BBM beta roll out with the option to create a custom PIN, remove ads and have a special badge on their profile picture in BBM. Finally, we have a fun little contest going on whereby you can get your hands on some cool BlackBerry goodies. I don't know about you but free stuff is always a good thing especially with a nice BlackBerry logo on it. Be sure to head on over to the page, read the instructions carefully, and leave your comment to enter.

Now on to the more important topic of the day. It is time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Perfectly Clear by Athentech Imaging Inc.

As someone who has just about filled her SD card with photos, it is no surprise this auto enhancing application caught my eye. This is no ordinary photo editing application but one that offers brilliant image correction thanks to its Beautify feature. There are 18 automatic corrections at your disposal including Face Slimming, Blemish Removal, Eye Enlarge, Sharpen, and Teeth Whitening. The interface is easy to use and the difference in your images is quite noticeable. What I like about this application is how it shows you a split screen with a slider bar to see the before and after. Perfectly Clear is $2.99 from the Amazon Appstore.

Car Manager by Saper-ek

Over the years, I have amassed an entire filing cabinet drawer dedicated to my car expenses. Whether it involves the repair history, insurance policies and costs, or even the registration and inspections it can be quite daunting to keep track of it all. This application monitors and tracks all of your car related expenses. Users can track their fuel expenses and consumption, view history or analyze statistics and charts, track their odometer readings and tire changes, remind you of oil changes and inspections and even store data on fines, insurance, and other related data. It offers full backup/restore and a clean interface. All of your car's data is easily accessible at your fingertips for only $1.99.

Light Chamber by Marco Gallo

Nothing beats an experimental game to put your mind to the test. The object of the game is to navigate the black marble from the starting point to the green box. You accomplish this by changing the colors on the grid to red, green, or white. The spheres can only travel a path of the same color. Players simply tap on a box to change the color to guide the marble to its destination. Keep in mind that you cannot have two spheres connect (i.e. Two adjacent boxes of the same color each containing a black sphere). Tricky yet addictive there are so many possible combinations and 60 increasingly difficult levels. Think you have what it takes to complete each one? Light Chamber is $1.99 for BlackBerry 10.

Quick Launch - Application Launcher by Toysoft Development

While our BlackBerry devices are perfect for multitasking there are often times you may not want to swipe out of one application to open another. That is where Quick Launch comes into play. While not the same application created for legacy devices, it offers similar functionality. Instead of a convenience key, users tap and hold on one of the volume keys to bring up the Quick Launch menu. From there they can launch another application, open a file, dial a number, or launch a website. Barring the slight learning curve on how to setup the shortcuts, it is a capable program. The downsides are that third-party app compatibility is limited and keypad devices on OS 10.3.1 already utilize shortcuts and speed dials by using an assigned key. However, all touch devices will benefit. Quick Launch is $1.99 to download.

Howdy CrackBerry nation! While Mobile World Congress 2015 may have come to an end there happened to be some exciting news put forth by BlackBerry. Not only did we have a hands-on with the newly announced BlackBerry Leap, but we also saw a brief, blink and you missed it, look at the all new BlackBerry 10 Slider. There was also a mention of an all new Porsche Design device coming in 2015 which is being codenamed "Keian" in honor or Keian Blundell along with one other QWERTY device being noted to arrive this year. With so many new devices planned, the only problem we will have is which one to get!

Shot Share by IWIK

First up this week is an application suggested by one of our members. We all know how the BlackBerry 10 system allows for quick and easy sharing of our files. However, sometimes it takes a simple headless application to get things done quicker. The moment a screen shot is taken a notification appears both at the top of the screen and in the Hub. If you tap on the notification at the top of the screen it automatically directs you to the share screen, thereby saving you a few steps. Users can delay the screen shot notification, choose to automatically delete notifications from the Hub, and set whether it will go directly to the share menu on app invoke. In addition to sharing your screen shots it also organizes them. You can view all of your shots at once, select all or multiple shots, and delete them from your device. While we have seen an application such as this with similar functionality, there is nothing wrong with having options. Shot Share is available for $0.99.

Word Brain by Woody Apps

As a self-proclaimed word puzzle addict, I had no choice but to try this game. Now the first thing you will have to do, depending on your device, is adjust the app appearance for it to be suitable by swiping down from the top of the screen. That being said this is part word search, part quiz game, and quite enjoyable. All you have to do is choose from four different forms of play (find 4-letter word, find 5-letter word, find the missing word in a quote, and guess the picture) and you're good to go. The game is free to download and has over 150 levels in each category. If you are looking for a quick game to pass the time then give it a try.

Distant Suns (max) – unleash your inner astronaut by First Light Design, LLC

For those of you who love stargazing, Distant Suns is an easy to use application to explore the stars. The application opens to a vast star map where the screen controls are used to focus on specific objects, constellations, or planets. There are over 130,000 stars, constellations, over 200 galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters for you to see right on the display. Users can quickly set their location from any place on earth or off, change the date and time to show the sky of the past or future, learn stories behind each constellation, and touch anywhere in the sky to view extensive data on each object. Distant Suns is $5.99 in the Amazon Appstore. There is also a version with fewer features for $2.99.

Hook by Megabyte Bomb

For those times you need a simple and relaxing game, there is Hook. This minimal puzzle game may be easy at times but there are certain levels that will keep you staring at the screen trying to solve it. Each level presents users with interconnected lines, switches, and hooks. The object is to clear them all off the screen by tapping on the solid circles to pull back the lines without crossing them. The more intricate the puzzles become it requires you to clear them in a specific order. The one thing to be aware of is that there is no score, no time limits, and it happens to come come with a relaxing soundtrack. Simple at first, it becomes harder to put down as you advance. This brainteaser is available for $0.99 from the Amazon Appstore.

Browsie Browser by Daan Fransen

From the developer that brought us SoundBoard for Doctor Who comes this smooth and easy to use browser. There is nothing wrong with the BlackBerry browser but I enjoy installing third-party alternatives as well. This native version offers opening links in new tabs, ad blocking with updates, bookmarks, useragents, private browsing, export/import, night and reader mode, and the ability to lock the app with the pin. You can find it for $0.99 for all BlackBerry 10 devices.

BLOB offers addictively challenging games for you to play - 7000 free copies up for grabs

If you're looking for a game just like Flappy Bird and more, check out BLOB. BLOB offers 8 different types of game play. You can even think of it like 8 games in 1. All games a very challenging but as we know with these games, that can often make them quite addictive. In each game you collect gems. Gems let you unlock other different colored BLOBs to use. The default BLOB color is green. Other BLOB colos are red, blue, yellow, even some with a headband.

8 games in 1

  • Game One - The gameplay on this one is just like Flappy Bird. Guide BLOB through the gaps between the poles to collect the gems. You do this by tapping the screen. It's just as challenging as Flappy Bird.
  • Game Two - This game requires you to tilt you device to guide BLOB through the gaps between the poles but this time you drop through them vertically. I find this one the hardest play as I tend to over tilt - quite a bit - and so I don't get very far.
  • Game Three - This game has gems popping up from the bottom of the screen, coupled with bombs. You have to collect the gems by swiping them while avoiding the bombs. It has a Fruit Ninja feel to it.
  • Game Four - Here, you're on the ground and either a gem or a pie will come at you. Collect the gems but avoid the pies by jumping over them. Tap the screen to jump.
  • Game Five - This game is just like the game Drop where you guide BLOB through the gaps once again, this time by tapping on the right or the left. The screen scrolls as you do this so you have to be sure not to get left behind.
  • Game Six - In this game you just have to collect the gems by tapping the screen to control BLOB. But there are obstacles in the form of arrows, that you must avoid, obviously.
  • Game Seven - Objects drop from the sky - pies, arrows and bombs - there will be gems in there too. You have to collect the gems, guiding BLOB by tapping on the left or right side of the screen.
  • Game Eight - BLOB sits in the middle of the screen. Objects come in from either side of the screen. Collect the gems but destroy all other objects by dropping bombs on them. You drop the bombs by tapping the grey area at the top of the screen. You have to get the timing right with this game, otherwise BLOB goes poof.

Blog Games Room

The developer is giving away 7000 copies of the game, though this is split between two codes. One code offers 5000 free copies, with another code holding 2000 free copies. Follow instructions below to grab yourself a free copy. One thing to note is that this game is only available for full touchscreen devices -- Z10, Z30 and Z3. Unfortunately, it doesn't include the Porsche Design P'9982.

  1. Open up BlackBerry World
  2. Swipe down from the top Redeem
  3. Enter promo code: BLOBJH2015 or BLOBJMH5000
  4. Tap the FREE green icon to downloada free copy

If you are unable to get yourself a copy, you can still purchase it from BlackBerry World for $0.99. There is a free copy available, though this has ads.

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Hope you all had an excellent week as it certainly went by quickly. This week we saw Vodafone UK confirm they will carry the BlackBerry Leap but only for business users, a BerryFlow podcast with our own EiC to close out Mobile World Congress and a way to get Adobe Flash on OS 10.3.1.

Now on to the more important topic of the day. It is time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. Super Drop Jam by Brigand

This week in the Amazon Appstore I came across this unusual game. The premise is quite simple. There is a row of five numbers at the bottom whose numbers match that of a deck of cards and numbered tiles that fall from the top of the screen. Your job is to drag the tiles below and match with the ones as they fall. However, you can only stack them if the value is one higher or lower than the one falling before time runs out. For example, if a five is falling you could only match it with a four or a six. The more tiles are stacked together, the higher your score. If you need to clear the board quickly, tapping on the stack will make them reach the bottom and disappear. As a thinking game it keeps you on your toes especially when the pace picks up. Super Drop Jam is available for $1.00.

Health Pro by Fire Chest Apps

From the developer that brought you Backup Pro and Usage Pro comes this portable health management system. This comprehensive application handles information for multiple patients and family members. This is an application that you would populate with your personal medical information. It is your one stop shop to keep track of this data. From being able to input your allergies, insurance information, medical conditions and medications, and upcoming doctors visits, it stores everything for quick reference. Additional features include the ability to create charts to map your progress, the option to act as a journal for notes and appointment results, fast access to resources and websites that you enter, create and run groups of predetermined algorithms on given data sets, and password protection. To better manage your medical data, this application can be purchased for $4.99.

File Converter saper-ek

This is a quick and simple file converter for when on the go. There are several uses for an application such as this. Have a word file that you cannot open in Docs to Go? No problem this application can convert to PDF so you can open with Adobe. I know for me there are times I would like to send a PDF of a file rather than the word version. All you would have to do is use is launch File Converter and it will do the rest in a matter of moments. Simply tap on the on the file type you wish to convert to and then go through your files to select the source document. It supports PDF, DOC, ODP, ODS, ODT, PPT, RTF, TXT, and XLS. You can grab it for $0.99 in BlackBerry World.

MoPix by 10Soft

Growing up, the most powerful images to be seen, in my opinion, were the ones in black and white. Not only are they awe inspiring but are elegant and capture some of the finer details we might not notice in color. MoPix a small and simple application that allows you to take any shot in black and white (from within the application itself), apply some filters, and share them directly on your Facebook wall. Users can also take an existing photo from the library and apply the black and white filter as well. The free version does include a watermark though this can be removed with an in app purchase of $1.99. Another feature not available in the free version is the ability to save the new image to your device. Once you upgrade to the premium version this option will appear on the screen and can be accessed by tapping the green check mark in the upper right.

Smash Hit by Mediocre AB

Looking for some madness with marbles? This gem similar to those endless running games is certainly one that will turn your head. The first thing you notice is the graphics. From seeing the tiniest details on the glass objects that surround you to the first person view while playing it is a wonder to behold. Users can even adjust the graphics quality in settings. The object of the game is to travel through the different mazes and tunnels all while smashing the glass pyramids with your limited supply of marbles. Simply tap on the area of the screen to aim and shoot. For each target you smash you earn extra marbles that will come in handy as they are also used to destroy obstacles and other obstructions in your path. There are milestones to reach and power-ups to collect along the way. The visual style is impressive and there are various checkpoints to save your progress. However, the free version will not allow you to access these checkpoints. Players will have to start from the beginning each time they play. To be able to unlock this feature an in-app purchase of $1.99 is required.

Keyboard Shortcuts by Toysoft Development

With the release of OS 10.3.1, keyboard devices gained the ability to assign an action or speed dial to specific keys. As a throwback to legacy devices, it is a productive way of launching apps, composing emails, texts, and BBM's, dialing a contact, or even toggling notification modes and locking your device. Toysoft decided to take things one step further and code an application that works in conjunction with this feature and the ones already loaded. In addition to the 25 available keys you can assign, it gives you 32 additional ones. These include a bookmark manager, clipboard manager, shortcut to speak the current date, time, and temperature, system information, place a fake call, flashlight, and miscellaneous shortcuts. Keyboard Shortcuts is only available for OS 10.3.1 and is $2.99 to purchase.

Geodesic Asteroids by Peter Musgrave

Going through the storefront I came across this arcade game to pass the time. It is a physics based game whereby the surface is played along a torus or a donut. The path your ship takes is on a curved space, not a straight line, which makes it difficult to shoot the objects around you. That is also why it allows you to play on both a 3D torus or on a 2D map view of the space. This may be a simple game but it is quite interesting in its mechanics and concept. There is a free version and a premium for $0.99 that enables bonus ships. You can download this for all touch devices only.

Camera ZOOM comes with a myriad features and options to work with such as a voice-activated shooting mode, time lapse mode, and collage mode. There are also a variety of overlays and textures and a button to randomly apply them. This application gives you more control over your photos and is $2.99 to purchase.

Spambox by Britz Software Inc.

Going through the forums I came across this new and useful application. Spambox is a simple tool for blocking unwanted messages (text and emails) and unsolicited phone calls. This native spam filter offers a variety of features to assist users in blocking mail and numbers. It includes a blacklist and a whitelist for your mobile network and email accounts, utilizes keywords to assist in identifying unwarranted messages, supports automated cleanup, and download attachments for all blocked emails. One additional feature, called Shake to block, is one that certainly makes it stand out from the rest. You can block and blacklist the incoming phone call all by just shaking your device. However, it works for unknown numbers only and does not include numbers listed in your contacts. With its easy to use interface it automatically detects your email accounts (though individual setup is coming in a future release). Please note an update is pending so that it works with Outlook.com accounts. At the time of this post, Spambox is free for a limited time. While this is available on OS 10.3.1, it is not available for OS 10.2.1.

Whip Swing by Pixel Envision

There is nothing like a challenging game to keep you on your toes. That is where this pure whip swinging action game reminiscent of Indiana Jones comes into play. The concept of the game is quite simple, with only a trusty bullwhip at your side you must venture as far as you can swinging from branch to branch along the ceiling. One false step or if you miss just one, you are killed by the spikes below. While the premise again is easy, being able to master is entirely different. Do you have what it takes to be an adventurer? One More Line by SMG Studio

Looking for that one game that hooks you the moment it starts? That's how I felt when I tried this one for the first time. For starters, it has a minimal and retro look to it. Your goal is to keep your spaceship in motion, or rather in a semi-straight line for as long as you can without crashing into the sides or the various obstacles (i.e. colored dots on the screen). Players can do by making sure they pay attention to the blink and you miss it tutorial at the beginning that simply tells you to hold anywhere. This way when an obstacle comes along you can spin around it and then let go. While it propels your ship forward, just make sure it isn't into the wall. There is not strategy I can recommend to help you on your quest. All I can say is that this never-ending game has me hooked. Did I mention your ship emits a rainbow as its moves? It is just one more thing to love about it. Think you can last longer than a few seconds? You can download One More Line for free from the Amazon Appstore.

Last, but certainly not least, what better way to enjoy the holiday weekend but with a ShopCrackBerry Easter Sale whereby all you have to do is enter in the coupon code and get 20% off your entire cart.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Noon by Fallen Tree Games

Going through the Amazon Appstore, I came across an interesting and quite frustrating game. It comes with a simple concept but slowly morphs into a test of nerves and reflexes. All you have to do is tap on the clock as it strikes noon. That is the entire game in a nutshell. However, one may think this is easy but when more clocks (and limited lives) appear on the screen it becomes quite challenging. This game is free to download for your device, however, BlackBerry Passport owners should note that they should adjust the screen size to the rectangular setting for the game to work properly.

Text2Voice by FNBG

This native application takes a text-based string and converts it into speech in the form of an mp3. It supports several languages including Arabic, English, French, German, Indonesian, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. The conversion process is quite simple. All you have to do is type in the text on the appropriate line tap on the convert button and it is instantaneous. To listen, just tap on the play button. What you need to know, though, is that an internet connection (WiFi or mobile network) is required as conversions are made over the internet using Google translate and there is a limitation on the number of characters that can be entered in the field. However, if you are trying to learn a new language and need help with pronunciation I can see how this application will help. Text2Voice is free to download for BlackBerry 10, though not for those running OS 10.2.1.

Birdie Up by EntwicklerX

Commuting on the train to and from work there are times I just want to sit back and relax with a simple game to keep me occupied for the entire trip. The latest by EntwicklerX is one where you have to help a little birdie make his first flight attempt. All you have to do is tap to flap which means the faster you do the faster, and higher, he climbs. However, that doesn't mean there won't be obstacles in your way. You have to make sure that you don't bump into them on your way up. This game is free to download, though has ads, for all touch devices only. Please note that my device is currently running OS 10.3.1.

Sworkit Lite by Sworkit

Now that the weather is finally warming up it is time to finally dust off the running shoes and get back to the gym. Going through the Amazon Appstore I came across Sworkit, a personal training application that offers workouts to fit in with your schedule. It guides you through video exercises demonstrated by personal trainers, tracks your progress, allows you to target specific areas of your body or create random circuit training workouts, and lets you set your own time frame. If you're looking for some workouts to do at home and like having videos that show you how to do them, you can download this for free. There is also a Pro version available for $2.99 that removes the ads and includes additional preferences.

My Piper by Next Web Generation

Going through the forums I came across this cute little game called My Piper. It is a virtual pet and construction game whereby you have to not only take care of the main character but rebuild his town as well. This includes feeding, washing, buying clothes, visiting friends, and earning coins to build various structures including homes and restaurants. My favorite part has to be the mini-games section with eight games based on a few popular ones (i.e. 2048) to entertain the little guy and yourself. The graphics are attractive and gameplay is smooth. While only available for non-Qwerty devices, you can download this treat for FREE.

Fatal Escape arrives for BlackBerry 10 - Android and iOS to follow later in the year

Another potentially addictive game has hit BlackBerry World. Fatal Escape from ovogame (who gave us Smiley's Pop and Jump Birdy Jump) is a platform scrolling game and using just a screen tap you must maneuver your cube as far as possible. One wrong move and it's game over though.

Ovogame kindly put together the above video which shows off Fatal Escape in all its prime. The game costs a couple of bucks so it's well worth watching the short video to see if this one is worthy of a place on your BlackBerry 10 device.

If you're after a challenge you've come to the right place. I've been playing Fatal Escape on my BlackBerry Passport today and it's real tough - but one of those games where you just have to have another go each time you fail. In fact, the developer sums it up nicely:

You'll need to avoid all the pitfalls and collect all the yellow stars to fully complete a level. Trust me, you'll need to become an expert. You'll probably scream a lot at your screen but you'll love this game. There are 4 different levels to enjoy, each one introducing more difficulties or new game elements. Now, download and play it if you think you can beat it - ovogame

Fatal Escape comes with a $1.99 price tag and is available for all BlackBerry 10 devices. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments.

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Hope you all are ready for the weekend. What a week it has been. Not only did BlackBerry release a new e-book highlighting enterprise customer success stories and a brief look at the apps on the BlackBerry Leap, but the new BBM Beta granted users the capability to to chat with individuals, not in your BBM contact list.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Headless Biorhythm by Burning Platform

This was a suggestion sent in by a reader and, of course, I jumped at the chance to download. It is an application based on the biorhythm theory that has been around since the 1900's. For a full breakdown on the history behind this theory, please visit this link. That being said, if you want to view your values and readings this native application will calculate it and send an update automatically to the hub for you. The notification contains all of the current values and their interpretation. By opening the application, you can view the monthly graph to track and share your data as well. All you have to do is configure the application with your birthdate and notification time. The application is $0.99 to purchase for all BlackBerry 10 devices.

There are various settings The application offers various settings for you to modify and create your phony call or text including settings a time delay, entering a message, selecting a ringtone, creating a keyboard shortcut to initiate, and picking a caller from contacts. Yummly by Yummly

I am going to warn you up front right now that cooking was never my specialty. I have been known to either undercook or overcook an item as I sometimes didn't pay attention. My father was the chef in the family while I resigned myself to being his helper. However, one of my New Year's resolution was to get back in the kitchen. Yummly is a meal planning application that puts recipes from around the world at your disposal. It offers a powerful recipe search, the ability to collect, save, and organize your favorite ones in your digital recipe box, view recommendations, and filter recipes based on personalized diets (i.e. allergies). There is no shortage of recipes to choose from. It displays the nutritional information, ingredient list, and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare. Yummly is free to download from the Amazon Appstore. However, in order to collect and organize recipes, you will need to create an account either via Facebook or with an email address.

Funny Or Die Weather. Real Weather. Real Funny. by Funny or Die

I am fully aware that there are several weather applications available for BlackBerry. That being said, upon seeing this offering, by the popular comedy website Funny or Die, I just had to download. This mash up of humor and weather is sometimes just what is needed on a Monday morning at work. The interface is quite elegant. Weather forecasts are provided by Weather Underground and include a five day forecast, current temperature (low and high), barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, humidity, UV index, and sunrise and sunset. However, at the top of the screen is the original content generated by the folks over at Funny or Die. Dubbed as the "weather fact of the day" you're sure to get a laugh at each of the witty comments that appear. Now the only issue I have is the default location that is set to (and this is another joke), Boring, Oregon. It takes only a couple of taps to show your own location, but I know some people might not like this. This application is free to download from the Amazon Appstore.

True Color by Aurelien Hubert

I always enjoy a good puzzle game but this delves more into the psychological. It forces the player to stay focused on what you read instead of what you see. The concept is quite simple. If you choose the tap the true color game you are presented with four circles and each one is in a different color. However, the text in the center of each circle represents a color (i.e. green, red, yellow, blue) which may or may not be the one that corresponds with it. It is your mission to choose the circle where the text and color match. For instance, if you have a yellow circle with red in the middle you know that it is incorrect. If there is a green circle with green marked in the center then that is the correct one. It is not as easy as you would think especially when there is a timer counting down. There are four types of games to choose from and each one presents a different spin on this concept of finding the right color. While it is quite easy to fall into the trap, this game is fun and free to download from the Amazon Appstore.

What You Might Have Missed

Fatal Escape by Ovogame

As James so eloquently pointed out, this game is quite addictive. Although the game itself is quite simple, it is very difficult to play. The object of the game is to collect all the yellow stars all while avoiding the pitfalls and obstacles in your path. There are four different levels to play that vary in difficulty. Now the only question I ask you is whether or not you can put it down? You can grab it for $1.99 for all BlackBerry 10 handsets.

Get endless hours of arcade hopping fun with Super Crossy

$

As a child of the eighties, one of the classic arcade games I probably spent way too much time playing was Frogger. The goal of that game was to navigate your frog from the bottom of the screen across the road or river which contained various obstacles that moved horizontally such as motor vehicles, logs, and alligators. Being that this is now 2015, it was only natural, we would see similar type games available on various platforms. For instance, Crossy Road, which we saw earlier this year.

Marco Gallo is a developer who loves classic games, and it is no surprise he created his own native arcade hopper for all of us to enjoy. The result is Super Crossy. Rather than have our characters (Piggy, Froggy and Doggy) cross a road, the goal is to have them hop across the farm avoiding the pitfalls as you go. Only in this world, those obstacles happen to include flying arrows, table saws, fire, fog, and rolling logs with spikes on them. The mechanics are the same as Frogger only instead of a cumbersome joystick you simply tap on the screen to change direction and to move forward. Of course, the goal is to reach the farthest distance to obtain the highest score.

Along the way, players do have the chance to earn coins that appear in random spots. When you've collected a certain amount, the other characters can be unlocked. For starters, you are given Froggy, which I like because it evokes all those hours spent playing on my Atari (and yes I'm aware of how long ago that system was released). Really dating myself here.

As with all of his offerings, the graphics are wonderful and really do pop on the BlackBerry Passport. Gameplay is smooth, and this is a fun little game you won't be able to put down. Super Crossy is available right now on BlackBerry World for $1.99 and is compatible with all BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

Troubles Land - An amazing and extensive platformer for BlackBerry 10

It's not often I sit down and play games but when I saw the above trailer for Troubles Land from the newly founded Espoo based game studio Enksoft, I had to give it a go. I've always been a platformer game fan, and Troubles Land fits right in there and better yet, delivers on its promise of being 'amazing and extensive' thanks to its hand-drawn artwork and great music soundtrack. For $0.99, you get 30 levels of awesome gameplay and seven different characters to play through as, extending the replay value of Troubles Land.

When lands are in trouble heroes shall always arise, Join our seven heroes on their journey through a very dangerous world to save or even dominate that land. A journey that will take your breathe away with mystery, challenges and fun.

Features:

  • More than 30 levels of extraordinary gameplay that will hook you for tens of hours.
  • Seven Heroes to choose from.
  • Amazing Hand-drawn Art and Music.
  • Epic Boss Battles

My biggest qualm with Troubles Land is the limited device support. For whatever reason, the developers have only made it available for the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Z3, BlackBerry Z30 as well as the Porsche Design P'9982 and Porsche Design P'9983 but as long as you have one of those devices, you're all set.

UPDATE - I reach out to ENKSoft and asked for additional device support. They quickly responded and noted they have now added Q10 and Passport support. It might take a bit to filter through BlackBerry World but it will appear shortly. Gotta love responsive developers! Thanks ENKSoft!

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Hope you all are ready for the weekend. This week has just flown by and I just do not know where to begin. First and foremost, there is the thorough and comprehensive review of the BlackBerry Leap by none other than our EiC himself, Bla1ze. I highly recommend you take a moment to read through the entire piece. Also this week we saw an update to BBM beta which finally gave users the ability to hide sticker packs (though not delete them) and a brand new Twitter for BlackBerry 10 update. All in all a very good week if I say so myself.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Text Clock by Ordinary Spoon

Going through the storefront this week I came across Text Clock which is exactly what it says it is. It is a text-based clock application for your BlackBerry device and spells out each word to tell you the time. Depending on how you wish to view the time there are two options. The first shows the time by lighting up certain characters while others stay greyed out in the background while the other only displays the text related to the time. Users have several options at their fingertips, including the ability to change the font color of the lit text and customize three alarms each with their own sound. The clock updates in five-minute intervals and is a different way to quickly get the time on your display. Text Clock is $0.99 for BlackBerry 10.

Moon+ Reader Pro by Moon+ Reader

If there is one activity I enjoy, especially when traveling or commuting, it is reading. My latest just happens to be A Dance with Dragons. What better way to plow through the 1,000+ page opus than reading electronically on my BlackBerry. Moon+ Reader Pro supports txt, html, epub, pdf, mobi, umd, fb2, chm, zip, and OPDS files. The free version offers full visual options, 10+ themes (i.e. Day and Night mode switcher), 24 customized options (including swipe gesture), 15 customized events, 5 auto-scroll modes, intelligent paragraph options, and a keep your eyes health option for long-time reading. The pro version offers all that and more to ensure all the bibliophiles out there get the best possible experience. Moon+ Reader Pro is $4.90 to download from the Amazon Appstore but you can try the limited feature free version. However it lacks PDF support and has an older interface.

South Park Pinball by Zen Studios

Those foul-mouthed elementary school boys are back in this pinball adventure based on the popular TV show. With every reference, sound, and character imaginable this two-table pinball game delivers an entertaining experience. One table is based on the town of South Park, and mimics the paper cutout style, while the other is devoted to Butters and his very own pinball game. As someone who has been a fan since the very beginning, you will love all of the references and sound clips taken from their vast media library. South Park Pinball is $3.99 in the Amazon Appstore.

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Hope you all are ready for the weekend. What else can I say but that this was certainly a MAD week and I mean that literally. Moving along to bigger and better things this week we not only saw the release of OS 10.3.2 Beta Autoloaders for developers but the acquisition of WatchDox by BlackBerry and that BlackBerry expanded the BlackBerry Leap's availability to U.S., Germany and France.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Secure Hub by Utkarsh Kumar Jauhari

First up this week is an application that I came across in my inbox. Secure Hub allows you to hide e-mails in the BlackBerry Hub to prevent others from accessing your emails without using a device password. We all know that we have the ability to show our email accounts in the hub, in a separate account, or in both. For this application to work properly it is best to choose the "Show Only in Hub" setting. Once an account is locked, the messages can no longer be seen in the hub. The application is easy to use and you can either lock emails automatically or manually. Users can even change the notification pop text for new messages received. For now the developer limited the maximum email count to 300. You can find Secure Hub for $0.99.

Simply Bowling by FileArchiveHaven

For those who love bowling the developer behind Secure Antivirus Pro brings us this simple multiplayer 3D game. Players can not only compete against their friends on other phones but are able to play against each other on the same device using hot seat mode. The game offers quite a few features including the option to control the graphics quality, multiple lanes to choose from, free online multiplayer mode, and the ability to customize the AI difficulty. It may be simple but it is fun to play. Users can also move the position of the ball on the lane adjust the angle for a better shot. The premium version is $1.99 to purchased and there is also a free, albeit limited, version available to download with ads.

Microtrip by madpxl & birslip

If there was ever a game to be addicted to it is this one. Microtrip is a physics arcade game that is unlike most of the ones we're used to. It is an endless runner game whereby you are put into the body of a strange creature. There are few twists to the game, such as it is vertical instead of horizontal, but that makes it more interesting. Your goal is to go as far as possible all while avoiding the monsters and eating the white cells that keep you alive. How do you play this game you might ask? All you have to do is tilt your device in the direction you wish to go in. The visuals are stunning and it is a fun little game to play. Microtrip is free to download from the Amazon Appstore.

OfficeSuite 8 Free by MobiSystems, Inc.

When it comes to Docs to Go there we've documented a few updates we would like to see. So when going through the Amazon Appstore I decided to check this out. For work, Excel happens to be my most used application for accessing various financial spreadsheets. As you know, some of the basic features such as creating, deleting and renaming a sheet is missing as was inserting and deleting rows. I have to say that even in the free version of this suite, all of those functions are back. What I also like about this suite is how it offers templates, another feature I utilize on the desktop version, even if the selection is limited on the free version. If you are looking for an alternative office program for your BlackBerry you download it for free. The professional version is $19.99, however, at the time that I am writing this it is currently on sale in the Amazon Appstore for $9.99.
