All of the information you need throughout the day will be shown on a single screen. There is even an option to switch from a light to a dark theme. ColorNote Notepad Notes by Social & Mobile, Inc.

For those who don't know me I am a firm believer in organized chaos. Technically, I try to keep my to-do lists in order and everything organized. In reality, it just means I know how to navigate the pile of paper and post-it notes to find what I need. As I am always willing to try any and every note-taking application available, I thought I would give this a try. Color Note is a simple notepad editing application to write notes, memos, emails, messages, shopping lists and more and sync across your devices. It organizes notes by color, gives the option to create checklists for to-dos and shopping lists, organize your schedule in the calendar (theirs, not the BlackBerry native app), password protect notes, option to backup or sync online by creating an account with Facebook or Google, as well as other features to organize and categorize your notes. ColorNote is a simple color-coded application that you can download for free in the Amazon Appstore. While calendar entries do not show up in the BlackBerry calendar, reminders and alerts do appear in the Hub.

Craftsy by Craftsy

Under normal circumstances, when I attempt to craft I wind up failing miserably. I mean that the item made looks nothing like what it is supposed to. I discovered Craftsy in the Amazon Appstore and thought I would take a look to see if there were any new hobbies or projects to pick up. The application allows you to explore and access hundreds of online classes in photography, cooking, cake decorating, drawing, quilting, sewing and more. While there are classes that are free other will require a purchase either through the app or on their website. Some of the classes can be expensive, but there are quite a few that are free or reasonably priced. For those who love crafts and want the flexibility of learning on their own time and at their own pace, you can download this for free.

CrossMe Color Nonograms by Dynamix USA, LLC

CrossMe Color Nonograms

I stumbled upon this Japanese crossword game in the Amazon Appstore decided to give it a try. The object of this logic puzzle game is to build pictures by filling in a grid with different colored blocks. However, it is not as simple as it appears to be. Players are guided through the process with a quick tutorial in case you have any difficulty as it does not alert you if a colored block is placed in the wrong square. So that users know where to place the various colored blocks, they must look at the numbers that appear horizontally and vertically. For instance, a two on the horizontal line means that only two blocks of that particular color can appear going across and a three on a vertical line means that only three blocks of that color must be inserted in that direction. As you solve each puzzle, the boards increase in difficulty which means the size of the grid becomes larger as well. The free version offers 24 of the 400 puzzles for free and the premium version is $4.95 to buy. There are also two different variants available, one with color and one without color.

It offers auto reply detailed reports, security password lock, auto wipe specific folders, and, unlike BlackBerry Protect, does not require an internet connection or BlackBerry ID authentication. Howdy CrackBerry nation! Another week has come and gone and it is time once again to reflect on what has happened. We began this week with an informative BerryFlow Upstream Podcast whereby an array of topics and news were discussed. Next, we saw John Chen speak out against a certain Ontario MPP on his wanting to change the BlackBerry-only policy. Finally, we also let you know about the Vision Mobile Developer Economics survey, whereby a few participants are eligible to win a limited edition red Z10. Also, if you haven't had a chance, time is running out to take advantage of the latest Amazon Appstore giveaway that includes over $110 worth of apps and games.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Weather Beautiful by Ebscer

First up this week is a suggestion by one of our readers. Weather Beautiful is a basic and simple weather application. It comes to us by way of the developer that brought Pixelated and Classic Camera. One of the things I enjoy about this app is how it pulls images from your surrounding area as its own background (which do rotate). For instance, when I am in Manhattan, I see images from various landmarks in NY, and when I'm in Boston I see their skylines. Viewing the weather is quite easy and all you do is swipe up to see the 7-day forecast and then swipe to the left or right to scroll through the hourly forecast. There was an issue where certain locations would show a black background if no images were available (a default background option would be nice to have), though a recent update appears to have corrected it. Overall, this is a nice application for viewing the weather in your area quickly without entering in zip codes or towns. It offers a nice design and layout, and the images are quite pleasant to look at. You can download Weather Beautiful for free for BlackBerry 10.

Combat Squad by Influo Games

Nothing wrong with settling down with a good shoot'em up game. This title is all about shooting and destroying the monsters that threaten to destroy the peace of the world. Your mission is to collect items, upgrade your skills, and, of course, fight and shoot as many of these destructive beings for as long as you can. This is a nice little time waster with pleasing graphics to take your mind off things. The game is only compatible with the Leap, Z10, Z3, and Z30 but is free to download from BlackBerry World.

Rotate It! by Pixel Delight Studios LLC

Being that I spend an inordinate amount of time commuting to and from work, I tend to gravitate towards playing puzzle games. This jigsaw puzzle variant has 220 levels that are well designed to keep you occupied. The object of the game is to rotate the pieces so that all the pipes are connected. However, it is not as easy as it sounds and only increase in difficulty as you progress. There are two game modes, zen (no timer) and challenge (timer countdown), and users can pick any level to play rather than going in order. Fun and engaging, you can grab it for $0.99 in the Amazon Appstore.

Unclouded by Christian Gollner

With all of the accounts I have, keeping track of credentials and data can be a daunting task. Going through the Amazon Appstore, Unclouded popped up on my radar and I decided to take a closer look at this application for managing multiple cloud accounts. In addition to consolidating all of your accounts in one place, it also helps users not only view their content but scan and dispose of duplicates as well. Users can easily switch back and forth between services but note that you are limited in how many you can access in the free version. There are several in-app purchases, starting at $0.99, available to unlock additional features, such as unlimited accounts, dark theme, and password lock. The interface is simple and easy to use and I'm sure we can all appreciate how it analyzes your cloud storage to see which files and folders are using most of your space.

SpaceBeard is an awesome fast paced arcade shooter for BlackBerry 10

It's not often I go digging into the games section in BlackBerry World but when I do, I often find some hidden gems that I have overlooked. Such is the case with SpaceBeard from Noxus Limited that arrived way back in April. The name and icon for the game were just ludicrous enough to draw me in so; I paid the $1.99 to download it and give it a go. The artwork is excellent, the gameplay is fantastic and the fast pace of it all keeps me interested in 'just getting to the next level'.

Commander SpaceBeard's spacecraft is under attack. Stranded in space he has no option but to fight! Arm him with an array of arsenal and get to work doing battle with alien bugs in a fight for survival. Collect coins scattered around the spacecraft, trading them for weapons and armor upgrades.

Avoid obstacles while running and battle your way towards higher scores. From Bazookas, Harpoons to Lasers and many more deadly devices, each weapon is designed to take out certain zombie alien bugs quicker and faster than the other. Be WARNED, SpaceBeard requires quick player reactions! FIRIN' MAH LAZER!! … Expect huge EXPLOSIONS!

I've never heard of Noxus Limited before but looking at their site, they're an indie game development studio that offers a lot of exciting and visually appealing games. SpaceBeard is just one of their three awesome games available on BlackBerry World. You can check out the SpaceBeard gameplay below in the video and if it looks like something you would be interested in, be sure to grab it from BlackBerry World. It is available for most BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

Monster Busters: Hexa Blast by PurpleKiwii

Monster Busters: Hexa Blast

While I probably already spend too much of my free time playing and testing games, there is always room for another match-3 puzzle one. Not to be confused with the original Monster Busters this is an addictive variant. The goal is to match three or more of the same colored monsters on the hexagon shaped board in order to defeat them and rescue your gingerbread friends. The different hexagon shapes do make for interesting gameplay in how it limits your moves. There are over 400 stages to play that include different types of missions (i.e. focusing on one color), various enemies, and difficult boss fights. Did I mention that you only have a certain number of moves with which to make all the matches? It offers pleasing graphics and is a great twist on the classic match-3 games. You can find it for free in the Amazon Appstore.

Word Pyramid – Word Puzzles by XLabz Technologies Pvt Ltd

Word Pyramid

As I spend most of my time going through BlackBerry World, I happened to come across this word game. I admit I'm rather addicted to them so, of course, I had to take the plunge. The appeal of this game is the concept. The jumbled letters are presented in a pyramid and your objective is to rearrange them to form meaningful words that fit the within each row (i.e. Smaller words on top, larger words near the bottom) which is not an easy task. The levels vary in difficulty depending on which size pyramid is selected. There is also a timer counting down as you play so you better think quickly. Word Pyramid is free to download and is compatible with the BlackBerry Leap, Passport, Z10, Z3, and Z30.

Our BlackBerry devices already provide us with a high level security but there is nothing wrong with taking extra precaution. Going through the forums I came across this application. Designed for enterprise but being offered to consumers for a limited time it allows users to open an image and pixelate it automatically. Please keep in mind that the entire image is pixelated, not designated areas. The developer stated that an upcoming version being tested will include area pixelation. There are two levels of pixelation, default and heavy, with which to choose from and the application works offline. The resulting images can be shared or set as your wallpaper (for those who enjoy creating pixel backgrounds). Quick and easy to use, images are pixelated immediately upon selection within the application. It supports all BlackBerry 10 devices. Zombie Crossing by FileArchiveHaven

Zombie Crossing

It seems that no matter where you turn these days there is always mention of zombies. From the Walking Dead to iZombie, there are no shortage of these creatures to keep you amused. The latest game from FileArchivenHaven ensures you will get your undead fix in a fun and entertaining way. Zombie Crossing is an endless hopper game, similar to Crossy Road, whereby a player navigates their avatar across the landscape eating the brains of random victims all while avoiding the onslaught of obstacles, such as vehicles and trains, that block their path. There are seven different types of zombie avatars that are unlocked as you play, six different type of people to eat, five different vehicles, and one "angry" train. Being the game is set mostly in a dark setting (after all zombies come out at night) it is quite difficult to see all of vehicles racing across the screen until it is too late. For those in the US and Europe you can receive severe weather alerts with hub notifications. It also offers the ability to set the weather update interval, set custom background and foreground, and shows a list of favorite cities and weather stations. The interface is fast and clean and allows for customization. Being able to use my own images as the background is what makes this stand out. Therefore, I am always seeking out new ways to try and organize and view my files. One such way is by using a third-party app such as Insta File Manager. This application displays all of your files by category and allows for users to add tags so as to make searching for files easier. Amazing Breaker by Black Maple Games

Amazing Breaker

I came across Amazing Breaker in the Amazon Appstore and if you enjoy aim and shoot games, similar to Angry Birds, then you'll like this one. The goal is to aim your slingshot, with different weapons, at the intricately designed ice structures. There are several different bombs and explosives to choose from in which to devise your strategy. What makes this challenging is that the different shapes of each of the structures make them difficult to destroy 100%. You need to carefully plan your shots to reach more vulnerable areas in order to clear the board. The graphics are high quality and stand out on the screen. Amazing Breaker is $0.99.

Blast your way to victory with Vector Wars

Vector Wars

Between work, blogging, and commuting, there is nothing I enjoy more than sitting back with a good game to relax. The latest release from FileArchiveHaven, named Vector Wars, is a simple top-down shooting game that pits your newly graduated from the academy character at the heart of an epic space battle. Your job is to eliminate the enemy fighters to protect Anna, the folks on the mothership, and exact revenge on all of the space aliens that cross your path. During this venture, you'll also have to face the sarcasm and witty banter of your cohorts, which is quite entertaining.

The result of that effort is what you see before you with Vector Wars. All you have to do is press and hold on the screen to move the ship and use a second touch to fire your weapon. At the start of the game your ship is a small green triangle with which to navigate across the screen. Being able to duck and dodge enemy ships all while trying to blast them is not an easy task. Though I must say the controls do take a bit getting used to at first.

There is an array of enemies to fight, various upgrades and achievements to earn and unlock, three different types of ships, a cross platform online scoring system, and supports for the Moga HID Bluetooth Gamepad.

Features

  • In-app free and advertisement free
  • Engage a dozen different types of enemies, with varying speed, strength and skill
    • Watch out for the space choppers! They will try to hunt you down
  • There are 3 types of ships to unlock
    • Do you want to sacrifice speed for power and defense?
    • A faster ship with a quicker reload?
    • Or the stock-issued standard model ship (by the way, we believe it's name is Betsy)
  • Optional cross platform online score system
  • 22 different unlockable upgrades for your ships
    • Make them faster, add more default lives, or make your ship stronger!
  • Fluid onscreen touch controls
  • Support for all BlackBerry 10 devices
  • 11 different unique achievements to earn
  • Many many more!

This game is passion project for the developer FileArchiveHaven. The details surrounding the making and release of Vector Wars demonstrates the dedication developers put towards their work.

If you love retro style arcade games and don't mind some snark along the way you'll enjoy Vector Wars. When it comes to gaming the best ones I find are the ones that are old school. You can find it for all BlackBerry 10 devices for $1.99.

Check out E.X.O. a new platform game for BlackBerry 10

$
0
0

Looking for a new game to play to kill time? You should check out E.X.O. Recently released, E.X.O. is a platformer where you have to avoid obstacles and shoot enemies to complete each level. The BlackBerry World description says it's challenging and I am finding that it is. I can't even get past the first level. But maybe that's because I'm not that good at these types of games.

While not being very good at shooter games, I do enjoy playing them especially when game play, graphics and everything else is very well made. This is the case with E.X.O. The developer has been working on the game for a few months now and he kept tabs on his progress via the CrackBerry Forums. We've showcased some of the developer's games before and was looking forward to this game. It doesn't disappoint.

Controlling your character is simple. E.X.O. automatically moves forward, to avoid obstacles tap on the right side of the screen to jump. Double-tapping makes the character jump higher. To shoot at enemies use the onscreen target icon on the bottom left. You'll find another icon just above that which has multiple functions. It can boost your forward or it can lock your character in a floating/hover position. To do the latter just tap jump first then this arrow icon to lock your character in that position. Press the icon again to drop down from hovering. Whenever you perform an action you lose energy. You can see your energy bar at the top. Collect orbs along your path to restore energy levels. All-in-all, E.X.O. is a fun and challenging game to play.

You can check out the video for game play. I couldn't get very far and it's hard to play from behind a camera but by the end of the day I did complete the first stage. Stage 2 changes things up and you'll require the boost powerup a lot for those levels.

E.X.O. features

  • 35 Levels
  • Including 5 bonus levels with an unlockable character
  • Satisfying and intense gameplay
  • NO ADS
  • NO micro transactions
  • Challenging but rewarding levels with a steady progression of difficulty through the 5 stages

My only gripe with E.X.O. is that it is only available on full touchscreen devices. The developer wants to give the best experience and feels that experience will be degraded on square screens. Perhaps maybe not so much on a Passport but as of right now, you can only download it onto full touchscreen BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

E.X.O. costs $0.99, however there is a free lite version available which includes the first 14 levels - Stage 1 - of the game. If you enjoy it, it will be worth upgrading to the full version. If you have any feedback and suggestions for the developer you can drop a note in the forum thread.

Some of the basic remotes included allows for controlling the mouse and keyboard, accessing the file manager, controlling media (Windows Media Player), and power control. The application works over Bluetooth and WiFi, though not all Bluetooth stacks are supported. In order to run, not only does the app have to be installed on your device, but the Unified Remote Server must be installed on your PC. Once both are connected you use the user-friendly interface to access the trial remote or unlock the full version for $3.99. Spaceteam by Henry Smith

Spaceteam

Growing up, my family loved holding game nights. Here we would sit with friends and family and compete against one another through board and videos games. My how times have changed. Fast forward to today and now we can do the same thing with mobile apps. Spaceteam describes itself as a cooperative shouting game for two to four players. All players must have the game installed and be connected to the same WiFi network for this to work or by Bluetooth. Each player must carry out mission critical commands that appear on their display. However, as this is a co-op game, each player is assigned a control panel that may not match the commands. Hence the shouting and yelling instructions all while trying to work your controls. As you progress the instructions are delivered faster and there are more of them. How long do you think you and your team can last? Prospectiv by Marco Gallo

Prospectiv

I do not know about you but when news of this game came across a BBM chat, my curiosity was piqued. The reason you may ask? It is unlike any other game I have come across recently. While this is similar to an Android game, this native version will have you sucked in from the moment you start playing. The concept is simple. A player manipulates the piece they are given to match the shape shown in the background. While easy at first, it becomes more challenging as you progress. I cannot tell you how difficult it is trying to shift the shape into what is required. I spent my entire commute to and from work transfixed on the shapes and colors and trying to manipulate the piece. Prospectiv pulls you in, and there is no end in sight. You can find it $1.99 for all BlackBerry 10 devices in BlackBerry World.

S10 for Slack by Justin Mitchell

S10 for Slack

Slack is the preferred messaging application for several teams and businesses as part of their workflow. For what I have to accomplish, I currently use the Slack APK on my device to access the service. Recently, BlackBerry World has released not just one, but two native applications. S10 for Slack, from the developer that brought you Gazette is a BlackBerry 10 slack client that is headless and offers Hub support. Please note that it will appear as a separate account in your Hub when you swipe to the right. It supports multiple teams, background notifications, has file uploads and search, and has both light and dark themes. While there is room for improvement (i.e. the UI, added features are missing) and Hub notifications can be spotty, it is a native alternative for those looking to communicate with their teams. There have already been a few updates since its initial release. S10 is $0.99 (at the time of this post) for BlackBerry 10 devices and is available to download in BlackBerry World.

SMSArchive by KQSoft Inc.

SMSArchive

Believe it or not I still utilize SMS. A shocker I know but there are friends and family not on BBM, who still communicate via this method. Not only that but I communicate with co-workers as well regarding projects and sometimes these messages need to be retained for future use. There are several archiving applications at your disposal, but I always love trying out the latest and greatest to see what they offer. SMSArchive allows you to backup your device text messages to a database as well as save MMS attachments to a folder on your device/SD Card/Cloud. From the database, you can view the messages as a conversation as if you were in the BlackBerry Text Messages App. From there you can filter by date, search keywords, delete, copy, share, and export to a CSV or text file. The application will also provide analytics and reports on messages such as how many you sent and received by date or by name. These reports can be shown in data view or as bar charts. It also allows you to archive messages from multiple BB10 devices to the same database. SMSArchive is $1.99 for all BlackBerry 10. You can find it in BlackBerry World, and it is a native application.

Speaking of catching up, quite a few interesting things happened in the last few days. The Verizon rollout of OS 10.3.2.858 for the BlackBerry Q10, Z10 and Z30 began, there was another BerryFlow Upstream Podcast that dealt with leaks, BBM Money news, and that the BlackBerry 'Dallas' and BlackBerry 'Venice are appearing database records in a few countries.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Hg10 by Lebreton Pierre

Hg10

One from the mailbag, our first selection is a generic XMPP client for BlackBerry 10. It allows you to connect to any server that uses the XMPP protocol, though it mainly focuses on Google Hangouts. The application offers an array of features including using the Gmail API to retrieve history, synchronizing between devices, filtering favorite contacts using the pinch gesture, offering headless support and notifications, sending voice messages, and supporting Google Drive. Please note that hub integration requires OS 10.3.1 and higher. Hg10 is a native application that is free to download in BlackBerry World.

Criminal Case by Pretty Simple

Criminal Case

After receiving several invitations by friends and family, I decided to try this detective-themed hidden object game. The object of the game is to investigate crime scenes and bring the killer to justice. Along the way you examine and analyze clues and samples to look for evidence, interrogate witnesses and suspects, and play against your friends. While there are in-app purchases I have been able to advanced, at least so far, without earning stars as I play. The game is simple, fun, and comes with a variety of puzzles. Nothing wrong with a time waster and this one is free to download. You can find Criminal Case in the Amazon Appstore .

Connect Water Pipes by G Soft Team

Connect Water Pipes

Another engaging game for you to play is Connect Water Pipes. The concept is quite simple and fits the name. Your goal is to use logic to connect as many pipes as you can. The reason being is that you have to water as many flowers as you can which also results in a higher score. There are over 350 levels in this game that are enjoyable as well as challenging and three different types of play. Users can choose watering a certain number of flowers, connecting a certain number of pipes, or both. However, users are given a limited number of turns to complete each level. Connect Water Pipes is a free native application to download in BlackBerry World.

Nature Sound Relax Pro by TPSoft

Nature Sound Relax Pro

Sleep and relaxation is an important part of being fit and healthy. While I try to get the recommended seven or eight hours sleep at night to function normally, my routine doesn't always allow for that. Sometimes listening to various sounds in the background help lull us to sleep. Nature Sound Relax Pro includes three different collections, Forest, Ocean, and Rain, as well as Daily Sounds (i.e. Sleep Noise Sound) to help you sleep in no time. It offers an intuitive UI and a timer which users can set from 10 minutes to 8 hours. This Built for BlackBerry application is $2.99 to purchase in BlackBerry World for all handsets. Uses may download the free trial though it does offer limited features.

BeFunky Photo Editor & Collage Maker by BeFunky Inc.

BeFunky Photo Editor & Collage Maker

I know what you are going to say, another photo editing application in the roundup? My answer is you can never have too many of them especially if you are obsessed with taking photos as I am. There are two versions available, the free version and a premium one for $1.99. BeFunky is a robust application that features photo-editing tools, tons of fonts, photo frames, stickers, speech bubbles, and collage templates. The free version limits you to 32 photo effects while the pro has over 70. Users can explore other photos uploaded to the BeFunky network as well as upload their own. What I like about this application is that not only does it provide the basic photo-editing tools and then some but also the fun ones as well, which they call goodies. Not to mention the collage maker is fairly decent as well. It is basically three apps in one. So be sure to take the free one for a spin. You can find BeFunky in the Amazon Appstore.

While BlackBerry ceased supporting Adobe Flash in OS 10.3.1, there were workarounds available to get this feature back. With its new name, Zeus Browser, it users the publicly available open-source BlackBerry Browser and includes supports several different browser plugin formats, including Adobe Flash version 11 and DuckDuckGo support. Brain Blocks – The Mind Puzzle by Modern Alchemists OG

Brain Blocks

Looking to give your mind a workout? Brain Blocks, formerly known as Vibes, is a puzzling tile game with a simple concept. Your task is to restore the ambience of the color palette to restore harmony. This is accomplished by swapping tiles. These blocks do not have to be adjacent to one another. All you have to do is tap two blocks to swap their position that can only be moved left-right or up-down. Each block has to be moved a set number of times, indicated by the dots within the block. If you swap a block incorrectly it will turn black and you will have to undo your last move to continue. When you first download there are 100+ levels included. Additional levels (over 300 in total) are available via an in-app purchase and it offers varying grid sizes. Users may also purchase more undos within the app as well. Taylor, the main character, is stranded and you are the only person he can communicate with. It is up to you to make the important decisions in real-time to ensure he stays alive. This means you will be interacting with the character throughout the day making small decisions to follow the correct path. It offers multiple language support, support for multiple accounts, dedicated account linked to Hub, light/dark theme support, custom notifications, real time messaging, file sharing, search and archiving, and access to the team directory. BlackBerry App Roundup 7/24/15

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Hope you all are having a fantastic week. It is time once again to make sure you are all caught up with what happened since our last roundup. One of the more important events was the BlackBerry Security Summit with our own EiC there in person covering it live. Quite a bit of news came out of this event including more information on the AtHoc acqusitions and an update on the Secusmart. In other news, several Canadian carriers are rolling out the OS 10.3.2 update, Mobile Nations introduced Kicked TV which focuses on various crowdfunding projects, and there is an awesome contest whereby you can win a BlackBerry Leap and other goodies. However, make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

Now it's time to bring you this week's picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I've rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Word Rings by Maribou Inc.

Word Rings

Looking for an interesting twist on the classic word game? Then be sure to try Word Games. Users are giving two pictures that appear in the upper left and right which you can tap on to zoom in for a closer look. It is up to you to find the words, using the rings below, that relate to the photos. Each photo requires two responses. Some of the answers you will decipher right away, others take more time. For instance if you are shown a picture of a row of bananas, the two acceptable answers are "bananas" and "fruit." In order to input your gueses, you will have to tap on the corresponding circles that contain the words broken down into separate letters or groups of letters. The game itself is not as easy as it looks and can be quite challenging. You can purchase hints, shuffle the circles, or try to figure them out on your own. Word Rings is free to download in the Amazon Appstore.

Talking Timer by bytebau

Talking Timer

Going through BlackBerry World, this application caught my eye and, of course, I had to try it out. It is an interesting concept for a countdown timer. This application speaks to you and a voice tells you the remaining time in adjustable intervals. These announcements are meant to keep you informed. Users can modify a running timer on the fly, create timers, assign a color to each one, set the repeating voice announcements every 60, 30, 20, 15 or 19 minutes, and assign a signal sound before each announcement. There are more than 20 built-in signal and alarm sounds and you can even add your own. There is a demo version available in BlackBerry World and the full version is available for $0.99. Talking Timer is compatible with most handsets running OS 10.3 and higher and is a native applicaiton.

Bam! Comic Reader by Knoware

Bam! Comic Reader

For anyone who enjoys reading comic books by various publishers there is Bam! This reader supports all common comic book formats including cbr and cbz, all common comic book image formats including jpeg and png, and automatically searches and catalogs all comic books on your phones internal storage and SD card (though it takes time to do so). Bam! seamlessly switches between books and allows users to switch pages by tapping or using a slider bar. The only thing I recommend to speed up the process of finding the files on your SD card or device is to turn on Airplane Mode. It was a suggestion from the forums and, by doing so, I was able to locate the comic in a matter of seconds. Bam! Comic Reader is $0.99 in BlackBerry World and is a native application.

Light Anytime by IWIK

Light Anytime

I know what you are going to say but a reader suggested this app and I have to say I found it to be useful. Several times during the week I get home late from work and it is already dark out. Being the klutz that I am I sometimes drop the keys in the dark and have to go searching for them. Rather than trying to waive repeatedly so that the sensor on the outside light turns on, this headless and native application uses the volume keys to activate the flashlight even when the phone is locked. There is an optional timer to turn it off, adjustable strobe rates, and different activation choices. Light Anytime is $0.99 for BlackBerry 10.

Hands-on with Top Speed: Drag & Fast Racing for BlackBerry 10

$
0
0

While there may be quite a few car racing games available in the storefront, there is always room for one more, at least in my opinion. The latest release from Thunderbull Entertainment is certainly a drag racing game filled with action, stunning visuals, and customization. As someone who spent the better part of her youth playing racing games, albeit with those clunky wheel attachments, I was not going to pass up the opportunity to try this out.

First off, let me point out Top Speed is a native application, not an Android port, though it is available on the other platforms. Next, the object of the game, as with these types, is to dominate your rivals in each of the head-to-head drag races and become the supreme underground racing kingpin. Sounds easy right? Far from it.

Top Speed Mechanic

What I like about this game is how you can customize your car, it's color, and add decals. There are 69 stock cars to choose from and 20 criminal overlords to compete against, though, these are unlocked as you progress and earn cash. Of course, each car has its advantages and disadvantages, and you can fine tune the specifications to your liking. For instance, you can increase the engine power, upgrade the gear box and nitro (for that extra push), or repaint your car.

Top Speed Race

As for the gameplay itself, the controls are easy to use. All that is required on your part is tapping on the gear or nitro buttons using the dashboard at the bottom of the screen. You are not tilting or changing direction but waiting for your meter to reach the ideal speed (highlighted in green) to activate these functions.

In the easy levels, the drag races are short (i.e. quarter of a mile) and you accumulate points and cash for each race you win which be used towards upgrading your vehicle and purchasing fuel. As you progress the courses become more difficult, and your crew will alert you if your car doesn't meet the criteria of a certain race. Hence, the reason for the various upgrades offered.

Features

  • Pick from 69 cars: stock rides, dragsters and police vehicles
  • Let your creativity flow through a ton of tuning and customization options
  • Drive in 5 city districts, each with its own unique theme and gang crew
  • A real-life inspired aircraft carrier to race on
  • Epic arcade game modes
  • Adrenaline inducing Most Wanted police chases
  • Mind blowing 3D HD visuals

This is a unique take on the classic car racing games though many of the beginning head-to-heads are repetitive. The graphics are beautiful, gameplay is solid, and being able to switch between different race modes (i.e. Street race, boss battle, most wanted, master race, sponsor event, etc.) make for some interesting matches.

Top Speed is free to download for BlackBerry 10 and again there are in-app purchases if you wish to obtain certain items. However, quite of few of these items can be earned through gameplay, waiting for the countdown timer to collect more fuel, or by obtaining special deals with sponsors within the game. Otherwise, you could purchase upgrades and fuel for various fees so that you gain an advantage over your opponent quicker. It is a decent racing game that will not disappoint.

I love trying out the latest and greatest especially by independent developers. DNote can filter as you type, by title, content, image name, file name, date and time. In addition, it displays an overview of your note with short content, title, and time. Of course you can also add documents and create a list of tasks. In order to create a task list quickly, simply jot down your list and separate with a comma, semicolon, dots, and new lines. Bar Addiction by Aasa Studios

Bar Addiction

Going through BlackBerry World I came across this native game about monochrome bars. While the premise is a simple one, the execution is a different matter. The goal of the game is to glide your finger across the screen following the bars to fill them with vivid colors. It is not as easy as it looks because the path you follow is scrolling from top to bottom. If you miss a beat, tap on the white space, or run out of room the game is over. Basically in order to earn points you have highlight all of the bars without straying. Bar Addiction is as the name implies, you will not want to put it down. Love first-person shooter games? Check out Open Arena for BlackBerry 10

Growing up in the days when Doom was popular I was eager to see how this would play on my BlackBerry Passport when it arrived in BlackBerry World. Based on the Quake series of games, in this case, the Quake 3 game engine, the goal is to frag or kill, enemy players to score points by completing different objectives.

Each of the matches happen in an arena and include such objectives as deathmatch (or free for all), capture the flag, and domination mode. Of course, you have to accomplish this all why avoiding the various obstacles and other players who will frag you first.

Open Arena offers 50 maps, 20 weapons and 12 multiplayer modes (LAN or on Internet). Now that we are familiar with what the game offers it's time to get down to gameplay. Being able to play this on the Passport is even better.

When you first launch the game you can choose from single player and multiplayer mode. There are also settings so that players can choose their avatar, and adjust the effects, and various game options. Once that is done you simply choose your level of difficulty and enter the arena.

Being that I haven't played an FPS in quite a while, it took a bit getting used to the touchscreen control modes. For instance, to rotate the angle simply swipe anywhere on the screen and if you choose to view the onscreen controls the joystick is the translucent circle on the left-hand side to move forward while the other colored circles on the right allow players to jump and fire. When they are hidden from view the controls remain in the same areas of the screen.

If you are looking for a great game for your BlackBerry Passport, Classic, Leap, Z10, Z30, and Z3 this is beautifully put together with seamless controls and gameplay. You can purchase it for $4.99 for BlackBerry 10 and be sure to check out the video below.
